The collection contains family and business correspondence, 1862- 1928, of Martha Rochelle Tyler (1846-1928) of Courtland, Va., and Washington, D.C., in part concerning "Audley," Westmoreland County, Va., and including letters written by members of the Richmond Fayette Battery (Company B, 38th Virginia Light Artillery Battalion) of the Confederate States Army; account books and loose accounts; commonplace book, 1873-1877; and records, 1896-1914, as postmistress of Courtland, Va. Also contains correspondence, 1861-1906, account book and loose accounts, and land records (Sussex County, Va.) of lawyer William Briggs Shands (1820-1906); correspondence, 1884-1921, accounts, land records (Southampton County, Va.), commonplace books, speeches, and case files of William Shands (1861-1922), lawyer of Courtland, Va., and successful Democratic candidate for the Virginia Senate in 1899; correspondence, 1841- 1889, of James Henry Rochelle (1826-1889) of Courtland, Va., and while serving in the United States and Confederate States navies and on the Peruvian Hydrographic Commission of the Amazon, accounts, commissions, and a diary, 1856-1859, while serving on the "Southern Star" on the U.S. Paraguay Expedition; and miscellaneous papers of other members of the Thomas, Tyler, and related families.
